Despite goalkeeping heroics from Sherwin Naicker, Jomo Cosmos suffered its second loss in a row against Ajax Cape Town by 2-1 at Olën Park on Sunday, 17 January 2015.
Naicker single-handedly kept Cosmos in the game with a number of mesmerising saves for the majority of the match as Cosmos tried to hold onto its 1-0 advantage, which it had for 50 minutes in the match.
Regular goal-scorer for Cosmos, Charlton Mashumba opened the scoring in the fourth minute for the home side, before Prince Nxumalo and Mosa Lebusa handed Ajax a deserved win.
Cosmos held the advantage in the opening 10 minutes with a lot of attacking runs on the left hand side through the impressive Cheslyn Jampies and Pentjie Zulu.
Ajax, on the other hand, soon took control of the game in the midfield and managed to take control of loose passes with some slick interplay between Tariq Losper and Franklin Cale.
Cale was a real menace and kept the Cosmos defenders on their toes for the entire match. It was especially enthralling to see the battle between Cale and Jampies on the wing.
Ajax had numerous chances at corners to grab the equaliser but Cosmos’ Naicker pulled out all the stops to deny Cosmos an equalizer before half time.
One of the saves of the half was undoubtedly diving to his left to stop Cale’s rasping free kick.
Ajax continued to barrage the Cosmos goal with shots and finally persistence paid as another inch perfect cross found Nxumalo who slotted the equalizer.
Cosmos’ defence was now on high alert with captain, Frederick Nsabiyumva, making a desperate defensive clearing with an outrageous bicycle kick.
The Capetonians were now looking to make the most of their advantage and deservedly took the lead after 75 minutes with Lebusa heading in the winner.
Cosmos could not make a comeback, which left their fans frustrated as they still are just one point off the relegation zone.
Cosmos next meet Orlando Pirates at Olen Park this coming Saturday, 23 January 2015. The match kicks off at 18:00 and promises to be an exhilarating contest.
