The Ikageng detectives arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with the murder of a 50-year-old man, Petrus Mathulela in Ext. 11 on Monday evening.
The youth appeared in the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Thursday) on a murder charge.
A passer-by found Petrus, a resident of Baipei Ext. 11 in the water canal near Ext. 6 on Saturday morning.
According to Sgt Kelebogile Trom, the police spokesperson, the police received a call at about 07:30 and, upon their arrival at the scene, they found the body that had been dumped there. ‘He had injuries to his hand, face and mouth,’ she said.
While the motive appears to have been robbery, the old man had no valuable items on him.
Trom says Lt-Col Johan Scholtz lauded the sterling work of the Potchefstroom crime intelligence and the Ikageng SAPS detectives in arresting the suspect.
