No money for capital projects in municipality

The Democratic Alliance in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality (KKDM) has rejected the municipality's latest budget that was tabled last week by the Executive Mayor, Barei Segotso.

The Democratic Alliance in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality (KKDM) has rejected the municipality’s latest budget that was tabled last week by the Executive Mayor, Barei Segotso.

According to Mr Johannes le Grange, DA Councillor in this municipality, the budget does not provide a single cent for capital projects.

He said the absence of a budget for capital projects defies the purpose of a District Municipality that is supposed to invest in the community and conduct capital projects to better the lives of our people. It also renders a number of departments like the technical and economic development department that is supposed to manage capital projects, redundant.

“Yet more than R3.4 million of the municipality’s R187 million grant is budgeted for “office equipment”. Furthermore, the budget for the salaries of the 160 municipal employees has increased with 17.55%. This while the national grant for this municipality has only increased with 3.47%,” said Le Grange.

According to him, it is a known fact that the KKDM became a dumping ground for cadres and the bad financial planning and poor service delivery in the municipality testifies to this.

“Our communities suffer without infrastructure, jobs and service delivery. KKDM is just one of the many dysfunctional municipalities,” said Le Grange
