ACNW athletes stake their claim for 2018 Commonwealth Games spots

Athletics South Africa (ASA) recently named their preliminary squad for the 2018 Commonwealth Games that will take place at the Gold Coast in Australia from 4-15 April.

The shortened preliminary team, consisting of 18 men and five women, will be submitted to Sascoc today (4 January 2018) and any athletes who achieve the qualifying standards before the final team announcement, will also be submitted for consideration, according to ASA.

The team is spearheaded by 800m title holder Caster Semenya and long jump world champion Luvo Manyonga, who both won senior world titles this year.

ACNW (Athletics Central North West) athletes who made the preliminary team are Semenya, Sunette Viljoen (Javelin) and Tshepang Makhethe (Hammer Throw).

Former Commonwealth champions LJ van Zyl (400m Hurdles) and Viljoen (Javelin) as well as IAAF World Championships Long Jump bronze medalist Ruswahl Samaai, 17-year-old High Jump world youth champion Breyton Poole and nine SA senior record holders are part of this illustrious group.
