1. Semenya and Viljoen will need to prove the doubters wrong
Caster Semenya has been impressive this athletics season, prior to the Olympic Games, with brilliant lap times and first places. Now just a few days prior to her entrance at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, a new debate has flared up regarding her legitimacy as a competitor. Semenya will want to prove all her doubters wrong with her first Olympic gold medal this time around in the 800 meter. Everyone in South Africa will be cheering her on.
Another question heading into this week’s athletics action at the Olympic Games will be whether Sunette Viljoen can finally bag an Olympic gold medal. Viljoen has had a topsy turvy year, but will hope to give her very best in what will surely be her final Olympic Games.
A nation awaits.
2. Wow Wayde!
Wayde van Niekerk will forever be remembered as the man who broke the legendary US athlete, Michael Johnson’s world record at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. He absolutely crushed the world record and suddenly the entire world took notice. Social media was ablaze with posts on the achievement with #Wayde trending the entire Monday, 15 August 2016. What a champion.
3. A long jump from tik addiction
It has truly been a rags to riches story for Luvo Manyonga, who survived jail and drugs to take home a silver medal in the men’s long jump at the World’s grandest stage. His jump of 8.37 meters nearly gave him a brilliant gold and surprised the nation who did not expect him to contend fora medal place. This just shows you that anyone can make it big if they are determined and put in the effort.
