Renowned watercolourist, Bill McGill, will join various Potchefstroom musicians in an evening of art and music, presented by Potchefstroom Rotary Club.

The event will take place at St Mary’s Anglican Church at 18:30 on 16 May, the day that McGill turns 81. The watercolours exhibition will be preceded by the classical music concert in the church itself. The Anns will serve a soup and bread meal after the concert, and there will be wine and beer available.

Bill has donated one of his watercolor paintings to the club, to be auctioned off at the exhibition. He has also donated a portfolio of four of his well known Marico prints, personally endorsed by the late Patrick Mynhardt, as the prize for a lucky draw later that evening. All of the above, plus secure parking, is on offer for only R150 per person. Bill Mcgill moved from Greytown to Rustenburg as a boy of 10 years old. During his high school years at King Edward VII School in Johannesburg, he learned the art of watercolours from Tommy Mills, and later, from Peter Hely in Spain. Both were products of the Royal School of Art.

McGill has exhibited in some of the top SA galleries and has hosted 38 one-man exhibitions. He operates his own gallery on his Bushwillows smallholding outside Rustenburg, the venue of his annual “country life” exhibition, acclaimed as the art event of the year in Rustenburg. He is associated with a number of leading SA artists, including Kim Donaldson, Dino Paravano, Mell Briggs, Douglas Treasure and Wallace Hulley, and is the procurement agent for the artworks, murals, woodcarvings, etc. at the Lost City complex at Sun City. He spent a year in Groot Marico, acting as art mentor to the inimitable Egbert van Bart while painting the inimitable Groot Marico characters of the day.

Tickets are available from Trappers in Mooirivier Mall (0182933056) or by phoning Lucia de Bruyn on 0836271897.
