918 arrests made in North West last week

In a robust response to crime in the region, the North West police, in collaboration with various stakeholders, have intensified efforts through Operation Shanela. From 23 to 29 September, this high-density operation resulted in 5,129 actions and the arrest of 918 suspects, reaffirming the commitment to reducing criminal activity.

The arrested individuals face a wide range of charges, including murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, and common assault. Notably, 50 persons were apprehended for drug possession, while 60 were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Additionally, 83 suspected undocumented individuals were taken into custody for processing by Immigration Officials. Among the 918 arrests, 310 were wanted suspects captured during targeted raids by detectives.

Operation Shanela included extensive police actions, such as searching 222 premises, checking 1,915 individuals, and inspecting 828 vehicles. Officers conducted 12 roadblocks, leading to the closure of nine unlicensed liquor premises and inspections of 89 liquor outlets and 18 second-hand dealers.

The operation also resulted in significant confiscations, including various types of alcohol, 14 cellular phones, 15 rounds of ammunition, six handguns, six vehicles, and a variety of drugs and tobacco products.
