Guts, determination and passion were just some of the elements on display during the opening of Potchefstroom’s own obstacle race course at Hoërskool Ferdinand Postma (1 Lanyon Street) on Monday, 2 May.
This race course is part of Black Ops Fitness, a new, military-style fitness centre that focuses on nutrition, functional strength, fitness and discipline.
Obstacle course racing champion, Hanneké Dannhauser with Ryno and Bronwen Verster are the main go-getters of this new initiative to bring fitness to Potchefstroomers in different ways.
“The event was a great success and we had a lot of locals who pitched up to tackle the various obstacles around the course.
We had 84 competitors consisting of four members per team. The winning team could also challenge the Elite Black Ops team that had some of SA’s best athletes,”said Hanneké excitedly.
Four Potchefstroomers did not take that challenge lightly and beat the elite team with a classical display of team effort – each member using their strength to their advantage.
The team consisted of Willem Erasmus (a seasoned OCR campaigner), André Olivier (SA 800-m specialist), Arnu de Kock and Annemarie Scholtz.
Teams competed in heats with the best time securing a place in the final race against the Black Ops Elite team.
“We had to complete a sudden death obstacle for the opportunity to face the elite team. We won the overall competition but wanted to experience this highlight as well. In the end, a fantastic team effort combined with a lot of hard work gave us the most satisfying victory,”said Erasmus. “The obstacles were of outstanding quality and the terrain was great to run on. This is an initiative that will surely succeed in Potchefstroom,” he added.
During the event, WarriorRic (also known as Ricardo Gressel) pumped up the competitors and the crowd with his charismatic personality. If his voice does not get you going then nothing will.
“I think, what makes this fitness experience so unique is that we want to make it exciting to do fitness.
It has a real positive effect on a person to overcome obstacles and this is the perfect place to do it,” Hanneké enthused.
