Vyfhoek Primary School honour lives of fallen learners

Fifteen months after the tragic accident, the school commemorated the lives of the young girls who died as a result of the accident with a special ceremony on Thursday, 7 December 2023.

Vyfhoek Primary School celebrated the lives of the five learners who died in the tragic truck accident at Vyfhoek Primary on Thursday, 18 August last year.

A teacher at the school, who was the programme director, Mr Mxolisi Bomvana,
told the audience, “Today, we gather here to pay homage to the Vyfhoek Five and declare
that their death can never be in vain.”

He added that “all the learners at our school must strive for academic excellence in
honour of our departed little angels.

“This is a special occasion, where the school will recognise outstanding academic achievement, borne of their perseverance and determination to succeed, even during trying times,” Bomvana added.

The principal of the school, Mr Corrie Smit, congratulated all the learners and encouraged them to always try and do their best.

He added that “learning should train children to think critically, transform their lives, change their behaviour and uplift their communities.”

The school awarded the best performing learners in different subjects and also introduced the prefects for 2024.
