Local MMA-fighter ready for Angolan challenge

“To fight against these types of athletes is definitely a privilege. You have to test yourself."

Potchefstroom’s top Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter, Roevan de Beer, will take on one of Africa’s best MMA fighters, the Angolan, Demarte Pena, in a special Southern African solidarity fight in Angola on Saturday, 2 December.

This fight will be a charity fight as the main event of the evening between these two top bantamweights in the first pro MMA event in Angola. Pena, also known as The Wolf, is one of the legends of African MMA who is known for his supreme conditioning and all-round game. De Beer, representing Coalition Grappling Academy (CGA) knows that he will need to bring his A-game and step up during which should be a fight to remember.

“I am looking at competing in more international fights. Right now, I am in the best condition I have been in, in terms of skill and experience. I am also in great physical condition,” states De Beer.

Pena is a well-known public figure in Angola and according to De Beer he is the best Bantamweight to come out of Africa. “To fight against these types of athletes is definitely a privilege. You have to test yourself. It does not help to hide behind a record that looks good against sub-standard competition. Maybe for your ego, but you will always know deep inside what the truth is,” states De Beer on the reasoning behind looking for new competition.

De Beer’s goals in future are to get into a good overseas organisation as soon as possible and challenge for a title run. “EFC (Extreme Fighting Championship) will hopefully see me again in the future, because there are one or two interesting fights that I think the people will want to see.”
