On Saturday, 22 April, Cancer survivors Palesa Mokgosi and MerryGold Moshoaliba teamed up and held a spectacular cancer awareness event on Saturday, 22 April.

The event kickstarted with the first session which was a prayer walk that started at the Ikageng stadium at 08:00. “The highlight of this session was having the North West MEC of Health Madoda Sambatha walking with us from start to finish,”Palesa explained.  Registration for the walk was R50 for adults and R20 for children.

While the adults embarked on the fun walk, the kids stayed behind at the stadium and participated in fun activities.

The second session was a gala dinner that was held at the Madiba Banquet Hall, where guests were decked out in either pink, purple and black in honour of cancer. Guest speakers shared words of encouragement, and an informative session about cancer. While organisers Palesa and MerryGold shared their own personal experiences with the killer disease, which they refer to as the beast.

The gala dinner was held at the Madiba Banquet Hall, where guests were decked out in either pink, purple and black in honour of cancer.

One of the special moments of the evening was when the pair lit a candle in honour of all those who have lost their lives to the ‘beast’. Initially Palesa and MerryGold were part of a sisterhood of 15 women who were battling the disease, of the 15, only three are still standing strong.

The event also assisted with providing information on how to support loved ones after being diagnosed.” Palesa previously explained that it is also important for survivors to gain confidence at the event and to walk away knowing there is life after cancer. “Our wish is to make enough money to enable us to possibly ‘adopt’ one person who is living with the disease and pay for their treatment to help ease the stress,” she says.

All funds collected at the event will be distributed among cancer survivors who are still in treatment in the form of donations. If you are interested in donating to the initiative, contact Palesa on 076 420 2513.
