NWU go down to TUT in the rain

TUT were just too good on the day and left Potchefstroom with a 3-2 win.

The North West University lost their first match of the 2021/22 ABC Motsepe League season against the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) from Pretoria on Saturday, 20 March at a wet Olen Park.

With Tawana not losing a game up to this point, they went into this encounter with a lot of confidence, wanting to keep their unbeaten streak going. TUT were just too good on the day and left Potchefstroom with a 3-2 win.

The side from Pretoria made it clear that are they here to claim all three points, opening their goal account within the first 10 minutes of the game with a well-controlled header from the centre of the box.

After a number of good opportunities were created by the home team they finally got rewarded with a penalty. Captain of the NWU-Tawana, Patrick Lebitsa stepped up and converted the opportunity to level the scores.

Lebogang Phatlane from TUT got his team ahead again with a good shot in the box after a defensive mix up from the NWU side moments before the half time break.

The second half performance from the North West University was very sloppy and full of unforced errors. With the rain falling down most of the game, conditions made it even tougher for both sides to convert their chances.

Another miscommunication between an NWU defender and goalkeeper, Tumelo Moshodi, gave TUT’s Steven Mvenya an open goal to end the hopes of the home side snatching at least a point.

Lebitsa scored a consolation goal for the Potch side from the penalty spot again seconds before the final whistle blew.
