“To be crowned the NWU Miss Varsity Cup is a great privilege. To be the face against women abuse means indescribably much to me.”
These were the words of the newly- crowned NWU Miss Varsity Cup and Consumer Science student, Sabrina ‘Sabby’ Horn.
She says her favourite moment of this year’s Varsity Cup was seeing how the boys and the community supported each other through the delays and the changing of venues.
“The competition has made every university and every group of supporters one big family. We are all committed to one another; we all want the best for each other and that shone through this year,” she says.
With Sabby originating from the Western Cape and, with Maties and UCT just around the corner, she says she never thought she would choose to study at the NWU Potchefstroom campus. One of the biggest selling points that led her here was the student unity this campus offers.
Sabby says the most important thing she’ll take away from her Miss Varsity Cup/Shield experience is the visit to the Potchefstroom Rape Crisis Centre.
“It will definitely stay with me for the rest of my life. It really had an impact on me and I realised how blessed I am and how much I have to be thankful for,” she says.
“It has inspired me and given me the confidence to stand up against women abuse. No matter what – I am going to stand up for this cause and make a difference in someone’s life. It’s time for us to stand up for our rights,” she adds. Sabby says one of her dreams is becoming a reality and she would like to thank everyone for their support.
“I just want to thank Claire Botha, who helped me with outfits and make-up, Wilmien du Preez for making sure my hair was perfect, Nicole King Will for the boss makeup, Chanté Goss for all the good food, Hetta Otto for being the coolest hostel mom ever and Nicke van Wyk who helped me with tasks and work. Every person in my life plays a huge role, so thank you. Finally; thank you, Jesus.”
Danielle Goosen was crowned as the first princess and Anja Esterhuizen, the second princess. Cast your vote for Sabrina Horn on https://missvarsitycup2016.pgtb.me/dLrHwf to stand a chance to be crowned as Miss Varsity Cup 2016.
