Former Bafana Bafana captain Steve Komphela described the death of John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu as “the end of an era,” at his memorial service in Soweto on Friday.

Komphela was a good friend of Moshoeu as well as a teammate of his in the Bafana team, and paid a warm tribute to the talented midfielder, who passed away from cancer on Tuesday.

“It is the end of an era, the end of a magical career, the end to an intellectual and the end to a man generous beyond comprehension,” said Komphela, describing Moshoeu as “an unbelievable talent.”

Komphela told a story of when he was playing with Moshoeu in the Bafana side under Stanley ‘Screamer’ Tshabalala.

“This were not working well, and Screamer is ‘Mr Panic’, he ends up screaming at us on the field, he tells Shoes – ‘you are the only man who can deal with the ball, don’t give it to these cows, if you give it to these cows, we’ll lose!”.
