Komphela refuses to blame injuries

Steve Komphela says he does not want to use Kaizer Chiefs’ huge list of absentees as an excuse for their poor run of form.

Amakhosi’s Absa Premiership goalless draw with Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday night was their eighth game in a row in league and cup without a win.

Chiefs have had their fair share of injuries in that time, with the likes of Eric Mathoho, Itumeleng Khune, Tshepo Masilela and William Twala all missing games. Sibusiso Khumalo has just served a two match ban for a red card, while Willard Katsande also sat out the Celtic game through suspension.

And it could get worse for Chiefs and George Lebese was stretchered off against Celtic, while George Maluleka also picked up a knock.

“I have to be careful, I am working for a huge brand and if an explanation is not clear it comes across as an excuse,” said Komphela.

“We are losing players like crazy …. I could list 12 or 13 players … but it comes across as an excuse, you have to try and come up with a team to play and if you don’t get a result you must own up.”
