Big Rock Cycling School reaching new heights

Since its inception, many Big Rock Riders have acquired the skills to become proficient cyclists, some of whom already participate at a competitive level with promising results.

The Big Rock Cycling School that Attie Koekemoer started early in 2022 gives aspiring young cyclists from all walks of life an opportunity to learn and participate in cycling as a sport. The cycling school is free of charge to cyclists as it relies on the local community, sponsors, and volunteers’ generous support.

Since its inception, many Big Rock Riders have acquired the skills to become proficient cyclists, some of whom already participate at a competitive level with promising results.

Some of the more familiar faces at the weekly training sessions are Attie, providing coaching and motivational support to the riders; Tommie, taking care of the mechanical repairs and adjustments on the bicycles; Ras, riding along and keeping the cyclists safe on the trails, and Phillip, in charge of the logistics, building the routes and maintaining the clubhouse facilities.

What started as a small group of cyclists has developed into a school with over 40 riders. Some have bikes and equipment, while others rely on the available resources at the school. The cycling season is in full swing, and new cyclists continue to show up in large numbers to join the school and get in on the action. On Tuesday afternoons, the long line of cyclists who show up for practice is now a familiar sight at the Anatomic factory.

Sports development is mainly about participation and promoting the opportunities and benefits of participation. Participation in sports, especially in a developing environment, spans a wide range of contexts, including access to equipment and resources. With the sudden uptake of new cyclists, there is an increase in the demand for bicycles, equipment, and parts.

Therefore, the Big Rock Cycling School calls upon the local community for assistance and support to provide these aspiring young riders with a fair and equal opportunity to participate in and enjoy cycling as a sport.
Please contact the Big Rock Cycling School if you wish to donate a bicycle (regardless of its type or condition), cycling helmet, or any cycling equipment, spare parts, and tools you can part with. Email info@parysmultisport.co.za or call 056 817 1465.
