The short and sweet of it

Seeing that this is my first blog, I thought it would be nice to start off with something sweet.

Life is like a box of… Red Velvet cupcakes

Seeing that this is my first blog, I thought it would be nice to start off with something sweet. Oh… and I do love a delicious cupcake with a huge swirl of creamy icing sugar. But what makes a red velvet cupcake so special and why the comparison to life?

Since the very first time I’ve heard of red velvet cupcakes, there has been a debate on how to bake it, what the correct ingredients are to use and whether it is really worth the hype. Even in the film, The Vow, the lead characters “agree to disagree on red velvet cake…” That made me realise that our lives are very much like red velvet cupcakes.

Have you noticed how we compare our lives to a standard set to us by others and what they think our lives should be like? Just like a red velvet cupcake your life takes up certain “ingredients” (your social status, money, clothes, education, your address, friends and family, etc.) all mixed up together. But what if your life turns out to be different from the ideas set by others? What if this cupcake called life does not turn out to be the bright red colour it “should” be? What if it turns out to be a different red? Would it still be considered a red velvet cupcake or would it lose its status?

This is actually so silly, because it is YOUR life, but others have so much say over it. It is as if you are placed in a display case and you give others the power to say what adjustments should be made so that you turn out “better”.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to take away any credit from those who bake that “perfect” red velvet cupcake, but I also don’t want the amateur bakers out there to lose hope if they don’t get it “right”. I’ve come to realise that life works exactly the same.  At the end of the day you should just be happy that you are trying to be the best version of yourself and not the best version of what others think you should be.

So go out today and celebrate your life… even the not so sweet parts. It makes you who you are… unique.
