Sizwe Mbalo, a former chairperson of the Ngwathe Local Municipality, lost his long and courageous battle with cancer at the age of 55 on 21 August.

The Mbalo family announced his passing saying that he was a pillar of strength, not only for his family but also for the broader community, where he made significant contributions through his steadfast commitment to public service. His career was marked by a dedication to improving the lives of those around him, particularly within the Free State province.

Sizwe Mbalo’s journey in public service began in the early 1990s during South Africa’s struggle against apartheid. His political activism started at a young age, becoming involved with COSAS in 1985 and serving as the Branch Chairperson of the Tumahole Youth Congress in 1986 while still in secondary school. His activism continued as a member of SAYCO in 1987, and in 1991, he joined the re-launched ANCYL under the leadership of Peter Mokaba.

Following the 1994 general elections, Sizwe Mbalo took on key roles in the ANC and government:

He served as the first Elections Coordinator and ANC Organiser in 1994, playing a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s democratic future.

He became chairperson of the Parys Transitional Local Council (TLC) in 1996, where he played a vital role in local governance and community development.

In 2000 he was appointed chairperson of Ngwathe Local Municipality, overseeing critical service delivery and development initiatives.

As Speaker of the Council at the Fezile Dabi District Municipality between 2006 and 2013, he was instrumental in legislative processes and governance.

In 2013 he became Deputy Speaker of the Free State Legislature, where his leadership and vision were crucial in shaping provincial policies. He held the position till 2019, after which he became the advisor to the Premier of the Free State from 2020 till 2023, where he continued to contribute his expertise to provincial administration.

In addition to these roles, Sizwe Mbalo was an active member of the ANC’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) and a former member of the South African National Civic Organisation’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC). His commitment to public service was further highlighted by his roles within the ANC Regional Executive Committee (REC) in Fezile Dabi, where he served as Deputy Secretary under  Victor Radebe, later becoming the Secretary of the Region under Steve Tshabalala, and eventually ascending to the position of Chairperson of the Regional Executive Committee.

He also served as ANC Regional Convener in 2021 tasked to rebuild structures of the movement in the region

His work within these organisations demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the upliftment of his community and the fight for social justice.

Surviving Family Members:

Sizwe Mbalo is survived by his loving wife Tswelopele Sinothemba Mbalo, three sons, and a daughter, as well as his sister Lydia Mbalo, brother Thabo Mbalo, cousins, uncles, nephews, and nieces, all of whom will cherish his memory and continue to honor his legacy.
