Special vote applications now open

You will be notified by SMS if you application for a special vote has been approved.

Applications for special votes for this year’s national and provincial election is now open as of today, Monday 15 April till 3 May.

Special voting for home visits and at voting stations in SA will take place on 27 and 28 May between 08:00 and 17:00.

Special votes for those who intend to vote outside the country at the diplomatic mission of registration, will happen on 17 and 18 May.

Remember that if you are a registered voter and cannot vote at your voting station on election day 29 May, you can apply for a special vote.

Applying for a special vote means that you can cast your cote on specific days before election day.

Who can apply for a special vote?

* People who are not able to travel to their voting station because they are physically infirm or disabled. Officials of the Independant Electoral Commission will then visit you at home or your place of residence to cast your vote before election day, if your application for a special vote was approved.

* If you will not be in your voting district on the 29th of May, and applied for a special vote, you will  be allowed to vote at a voting station  in the voting district where you are registered before  general election day.

Take note that if a voter intends to vote outside of the province where registered, the voter will receive only the National ballot.

How do you apply for a special vote?

* To apply for a special vote you need to be a registered voter and have a green bar-coded ID, smart ID card or a valid temporary identity certificate.

* To apply for a special vote visit www.elections.org.za and complete your application online for a voting station visit, or home visit.

* To apply for special votes at voting stations only,  SMS your ID number to 32249 (R1 per SMS).

* You can also complete your application manually by downloading the special votes application form (VEC1) at www.elections.org.za, or collect an application form your local IEC office.

Manually completed forms need to be hand delivered to your IEC office. If you cannot deliver the form, someone else may deliver it for you.

You will be notified by SMS if you application for a special vote has been approved.
