Visiting the Free State town of Parys, for the first time after 65 years, was a pleasant experience for well-known sculpturer Charles Gotthard who grew up in the town till the age of 7.

He now stays in Magaliesburg and visited Parys this weekend for his exhibition at La Vie en Rose in the main street of Parys. He was pleasantly surprised by the vibrant town and the hospitality he received.

At the age of 72 his remarkable work is still widely acknowledged. He has just completed the Steyn City Project where he has been involved the past years with 35 monumental sculptures of huge giant figures that had to be made, varying from 49m to 9m and smaller, as well as the mosaic underpasses for the highway in Steyn City.

The figures sculptured were among others dinosaurs and giant men lying in the park.

Gotthard mostly works with bamboo, bronze or clay ceramics.

The sculpture at the back on right hand side was made by artist Charles Gotthard in 1973 showing two hobos at a beer fest in Joubert Park, Johannesburg.

His grandparents also used to stay in Parys, and for him coming back to the town after all these years, was ‘n trip down memory lane with a lot of new memories made.
