Two die in accident on potholed R500 road

The potholed part of the R500 just outside Carletonville claimed two lives this week.

According to Russel Meiring of ER24, two people were killed and four others injured when their vehicle rolled approximately 10 km outside Carletonville on the way to the N14.
He says ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find the provincial EMS and another service already in attendance. Six patients had been extricated from the vehicle.
Medics assessed the patients and found that one had sustained fatal injuries. Nothing could be done for them, and the provincial EMS declared them dead. One patient was in a critical condition, while three others had sustained moderate to severe injuries.
Medics treated the patients and provided the critically injured patient with advanced life support interventions. After treatment, the patients were transported to nearby hospitals for further care.
Unfortunately, the critically-injured patient succumbed to their injuries upon arrival at the hospital.
The local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
Many residents have complained about the condition of this road for some time, and the Herald had forwarded questions about the problem to the Gauteng Roads Department’s regional manager, Ms Bulelwa Thomas, for a response.
“Kindly note that our teams are on the road as we speak, trying to do justice to the road. Please note that the road has passed its maintenance period, so no amount of patching will make an impact at this point. However, while we wait for the rehabilitation/reconstruction project, we will continue patching,” she responded on Tuesday.
Thomas has not yet responded to previous questions about the bad potholes on the roads past Greens-park and Blybank that also endanger the lives of motorists. The condition of the road past Greens-park led to two deaths on 17 August.
