Sterelizing your cat at this time of the year has benefits

Cats can safely be sterilized from as early as 4-5 months of age before starting with any troublesome behaviour.

This time of the year is mating season for cats. Cats are seasonal breeders and in spring with increasing day light length our lady cats come into season every 3 weeks until they are
mated (very different to our dog population).
Cats also come off their season immediately after they have been mated; this means that a lot of people are surprised by a
litter of kittens.
Unfortunately, the number of kittens born in Parys mean that we have a large stray cat population as well as a lot of unwanted litters. Cats are also often already pregnant with a next litter while the current litter is not weaned yet.
This means that sterilizing your cat at this time of the year has huge benefits.
Other advantages of sterilizing cats are as follow:
* It reduces the smell of male cats spraying/marking with urine
* Tom cats tend to fight a lot causing stress to other cats, bite abscesses and spread of
disease
* Tom cats love roaming the streets and getting into trouble or getting run over by a
car or getting maliciously poisoned or shot by pellet guns
* Queen cats stop producing one litter of kittens after the other and obviously no longer come into season
* It reduces the risk of mammary tumours (breast cancer) in queens
* The risk of pyometras (uterine infection) is cancelled out
* Both both male and female cats, sterilization means they tend to stay out of trouble and stay at home more significantly reducing the risk of exposure to diseases such as
snuffels, Feline Leukaemia Virus and Feline AIDS.
* By staying out of trouble your feline friend will also not spend so much time at the
vet, for diseases, injuries and cat fight abscesses.
Cats can safely be sterilized from as early as 4-5 months of age before starting with any troublesome behaviour.
Sterilizations are relatively quick and easy procedures; please contact your nearest veterinarian for an appointment. (Information supplied by Parys Dierehospitaal)
