Food parcel roll-out to bring hope to the most destitute families

Meals on Wheels, as a strategic partner of the Department of Social Development, handed out 213 food parcels and maize, cabbage, onions, potatoes, milk and samp rations to the most destitute families in Vredefort and Mokwallo last Wednesday. The Department of Social Development identified the beneficiaries of the roll-out. The food parcel handout forms part of an initiative to distribute 8,000 food parcels all over the Free State by the end of October. Last Tuesday, the Meals on Wheels team also visited Koppies and handed out 250 parcels.

Earlier on, the team brought relief to the residents of Parys, Sasolburg, Oranjeville and Allanridge, Odendaalsrus, Gariep Dam and the Springfontein area. There are currently about 20 Meals on Wheels kitchens in the Free State. The food parcel roll-out is made possible by private donations and contributions, says Peace Makapela, the team leader for the Koppies/Vredefort roll-out.

The Meals on Wheels admin officer for the roll-out was Rele Lekeka, while Pena Khauli was the supervisor/health and safety officer on site.

The beneficiaries queued with wheel-barrows and carts from early in the morning to receive their parcels, grateful for the much-needed help in desperate times.
