Cleaning initiative a boost for job creation

Cleaning initiative a boost for job creation

A cleaning campaign was launched last week in the main street of Parys just before the start of the weekend. No fewer than 77 bags of rubbish were filled and removed in two hours time. The campaign was the initiative of Ngwathe/Parys in Action, an NGO with about 70 members, established just before lockdown. The day was sponsored by Parys Sakeliga. According to members of the organi- sation, they want to deliver a service in the community to make sure tourists and residents enjoy a clean town, especially over weekends when the central business area is a hive of activity. Their campaign not only focused on cleaning the town but also created jobs for those who helped to clean. They started in the main street, cleaning from the beginning to the end of Breë Street. The plan is to expand the project and continue the campaign every Thursday, involving the community and business people. A trolley fitted with two dustbins is already being built and will be going around in Breë Street on Saturdays to ensure that the litter is picked up.

Their aim is for a cleaner Parys, Schonkenville and Tumahole. They also want to see the by-laws enforced, helping to establish clear guidelines for effective management of the town. Ngwathe/Parys in Action works together with Parys Sakeliga. You can follow their activities on Facebook or join their WhatsApp group. This initiative has shown visible improvement in the neatness of the central business area. A few changes are being made to the project to ensure that this initiative is also extended.
