Misleading information has recently been circulated on social media platforms suggesting that the Witrand Psychiatric Hospital would accommodate Covid-19 patients and when full, other patients would be transferred to nearby hospitals. The management of Witrand Psychiatric-, Potchefstroom, and Klerksdorp/Tshepong Hospitals noted that the false messages were being circulated by an unknown source and plead with the public to be aware of the misinformation.

In a statement, it stated that the message misquoted the Provincial MEC of Health, Madoda Sambatha. It stated that all staff members working at local clinics will work at Tshepong Hospital for six months, starting from 1 September. Also, accommodation and transport will be provided for the staff.

“Department of Health vehemently refutes such claims as they go against the unwavering commitment of the Department, Primary Health Care Facilities and Hospital’s mandate in the fight to reduce the spread of Covid-19.” Tebogo Lekgethwane, the Department of Health spokesperson said.

Koketso Diloane, Witrand spokesperson also confirmed that the details in the message are completely false and says the only Covid-19 cases that the Witrand Psychiatric hospital will accommodate are in-patients that may test positive for the Coronavirus.
