The last Friday in May is known as Tekkie Tax Day – a day when South Africans stand together to show where their hearts lie.
But this year, Tekkie Tax had to be postponed until 31 July due to lockdown. For more than 250 non-profit welfare organisations like Epilepsy SA’s Free State/North West Centre in Parys, it is one of the most important fundraising events every year. Sadly, this year, support dropped drastically with people and businesses under financial stress and changed priorities. Schools are also an important source of income, but the unexpected closing due to Covid-19 for the last week of July, was a catastrophe.
Epilepsy SA in Parys is usually one of the most successful organisations in raising money with the event. Last year, over R63,000 was collected, compared to only R31,500 this year. This was a huge blow to the centre that depends on the funds raised to care for persons with disability.
