“I am starving”- destitute waste picker

Speaking to Vaalweekblad, Sibiya who survive with recycling job said since lockdown started he struggles because all the places that he used to take his collected items for recycling in exchange of money are closed. He said he used to make R600 a month but things have changed for past the past three weeks.

“This lockdown has affected people like me who survive by recycling. I was told that people like me will receive food parcels from government but I don’t remember anybody coming to my place or tell me a place where I can go to collect them,” he said. When Vaalweekblad asked how he survives since lockdown, Sibiya said he survives from hand out’s from his neighbours. Vaalweekblad saw Sibiya collecting items at the open space between Vanderbijlpark and Boipatong where community dumps rubbish.
