How to care for your pets during lockdown

Your pets can be part of your entertainment and exercise habits as well

The Covid-19 pandemic is causing chaos the world over and with the lockdown we are experiencing now, we are all feeling anxious and uncertain.
As far as your pets are concerned, please be assured that there is no evidence that this virus can affect your pet or that they can infect you.
Please use this time to enjoy your pets, love them and cuddle them, especially when you are feeling the stress of being separated from the ones you love and while you are worried about your current situation.
Your pets can be part of your entertainment and exercise habits as well; run with them in your gardens, up and down stairs, play ball, take photos and videos and share amusing and amazing moments with us all.
Please do not take them out for walks or runs during this lockdown period – it is NOT allowed.
Please make the utmost effort to keep your pets in your property. Collecting dogs roaming the streets is not classified as “essential services”.
If animals are injured on the roads, this falls under “essential services” and may be collected by the SPCA.
Should your pet become ill, please be aware that your vet is available for appointments and emergencies.
He or she is part of the “essential services”. Please call them for advice and find out whether it is necessary to go to the practice. If relevant, have a photo or video of your pet’s injury or wound, etc. at hand or call the vet to make an appointment to see them. They have forms they fill in for you in case you get stopped along the way.
Please note that they are permitted to treat sick animals and sell food etc. However, routine procedures like sterilisations, for example, are not allowed during the lockdown to discourage the movement of people. The receptionist at the practice will assist you when you arrive. Please note changes in opening and closing hours. The SPCA is also available for emergencies and may help within the regulations they have received. Please be patient and be aware that everyone is working with minimum staff so things may take time.
