Monkey rescued from tower

Monkey rescued from tower

Apparently the residents were throwing rocks at the monkey so they responded immediately.

“When we arrived at the scene, we found the monkey about 50m up in the high tower. About 300 residents were surrounding the tower. We told the residents that they were supposed to be inside their houses due to the lockdown, but they ignored us,” says a SPCA staff member.

The SPCA contacted the authorities to assist them with the situation, but unfortunately no help arrived. “We couldn’t leave the poor monkey in that state and had to bring him down safely. Three staff members started to climb the 50m tower with only a net.”

But the monkey was fast and smart and jumped around the tower while they tried to catch him. The monkey was also too scared to climb down as there were too many people on the ground, screaming and throwing rocks at him.

Eventually, after two hours, the monkey was caught and brought down safely. “Our next difficult task was to exit the school grounds as there were so many people who wanted the monkey dead. They also started throwing rocks at us. We were happy to see three SAPS vehicles arrive at the scene. They escorted us safely out of the area.

The monkey was later examined and luckily had no injuries. The monkey is currently safe in their care and will be transported to a sanctuary as soon as possible.

Meanwhile all SPCAs need assistance with donations for fuel and food to continue to help animals in need.
