Watch out for dangerous potholes on R500

According to a resident of De Pan, Ms Thea Du Plessis, the road is in a much worse state than a few months ago.
“In some areas, there are almost more potholes than the road surface left,” she complains.
The part of the road between Carletonville and Red Cap Ranch is in a particularly dismal state.
Although the road has had some potholes in the past, residents say the recent good rains have made conditions much worse.
“Many people have been complaining to me, but there is nothing I can do,” says Mrs Judy Rossouw, a former councillor who also lives in the area.
According to Rossouw, she had tried to contact authorities but has not received any assistance as yet.
“Whenever there are people there to fill up the potholes, they only spend the day working on a small patch before they disappear again,” she laments.
The Herald took the concerns to Mr Dikkie Beukes of the Gauteng Roads Department on Tuesday.
According to Beukes, his department does not fix the potholes anymore but appoints a contractor. He says it was necessary to hire contractors for important roads because of a lack of personnel at the department, owing to the death of crucial officials and some posts not being filled.
Beukes promised to immediately notify the contractor responsible for the R500 to repair the potholes as soon as possible.
