Cuban engineers deployed to help save Vaal River

Minister Lindiwe Sisulu met with Cuban Ambassador to South Africa, His Excellency, Rodolfo Benitez Verson on 6 February on the occasion of the signing of a Bilateral Agreement between the governments of RSA and Cuba, on cooperation in the field of Water Resources Management and Water Supply.

The two counterparts were joined by Deputy Minister David Mahlobo and senior officials from the Department and the Cuban Embassy.

The Agreement will see the placement of twenty-six (26) Cuban engineers who will be deployed in various parts of the country to provide support on infrastructure maintenance and operation throughout the water value chain.

His Excellency Rodolfo Benitez Verson assured Minister Sisulu that the new group of engineers were highly qualified, experienced hydrologists and water supply specialists.

“I am very impressed to say the selection process was very rigorous which will in turn assist with the exploration of water resources, maintenance and management of water supply, he said.

It is anticipated that the new cohort of twenty-six (26) Cuban Specialists will arrive in South Africa between April and May 2020.

Their focus will be on operations and maintenance, technical and engineering support and developing guidelines of infrastructure operation and maintenance in clusters and provincial offices.
