Do you feel sluggish from the December holiday indulgences? There’s no better time than the present to set new fitness goals by burning a good number of calories at the 2020 Midvaal Fast One Cycle Challenge.

MEYERTON, MIDVAAL. – The prestigious Category A Classic cycle race is the fastest road cycle race in South Africa offering cyclists a choice of three routes including a new 28km route tailored for beginners and for those who have never competed in a cycle race. All finishers receive medals and Discovery Vitality members automatically earn Vitality points.

As main sponsor, Midvaal Municipality will have the opportunity to show thousands of cyclists and supporters from all over the country its renowned hospitality undoubtedly showcasing Midvaal as a desirable tourist and investors destination when the cycle race takes place on Sunday January 26.

“The Fast One” as affectionately known by loyal supporters, celebrates its 25th year this month. It was first staged in 1995 and named The Pick ‘n Pay Hyper to Hyper Cycle Race by Nigel Southern, an employee of the Bedworthpark Hypermarket. Nigel started the race in remembrance of a friend and colleague who was killed by a motor vehicle on a part of the existing route while training on his bike. The first event was organized by a small committee from the Riverside Pedal Pals Cycling Club and the Hypermarket staff. Today the race is organised by the Rotary Club of Riverside and supported by 10 Rotary Clubs. All profits generated are utilised for Rotary community projects. 124 Rotarians will once again assist voluntarily with marshalling and water points.

The race starts and finishes at Midvaal Raceway in Meyerton. Cyclists can take part in the 97km – an official Premier Seeding Event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour (R330), 50km (R230) or the 28km (R120) route using any traditional or tandem bicycle that is not motorized. Recumbent bicycles are also allowed.

For safety reasons, no persons younger than 16 years may enter the 97km race. Persons younger than 16 may enter the 50km and 28km routes, provided that written consent is given by a parent or guardian. The age restriction for the 50km route is 14 years and the 28km route is 10 years.

Wearing a helmet is compulsory, all cyclists must have a CSA License. A day license can be applied for through the CSA website before the day. Participants that do not have a timing chip may enter but will not get an official timing result by Racetec.

Entries and payments are via the website only. No entries allowed on the day of the race.
