At around 05:30, the security guard, Mr Siviwe Rubushe, heard someone hooting at the gate and went to see who it was. Upon his arrival, he found two African men pointing a firearm at him.
The Xhosa-speaking suspects were masked with balaclavas and overpowered him, seizing his 9 mm pistol. They then handcuffed him to a toilet and took his phone and his money.
Rubushwe later told police he could hear the attackers use a grinder to get through a security door before they fled from the scene.
It was later determined that they had only grabbed what is known as ‘face value’ documents from the scene.
The municipality confirmed that papers, which may include deposit or receipt books, traffic summonses and Natis documents, were stolen. However, they did not specify what they had taken.
Police later found a firearm in the vicinity. According to Masooa, it has been handed in at the SPA 13 store for further investigation.
As far as could be determined, the involvement of a syndicate is not ruled out.
The police ask for more information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.

By Tuesday, the traffic offices were still closed and members of the public were being turned away. It is not known when the facility will reopen.
