According to the communications officer of the police in Fochville, Const. Elsie Tshonte, the incident took place on the farm Kraalkop at around midnight on Saturday, 12 January.
One of the employees, Mr Kanelo Mokete, told the police that he was woken up by screams coming from the house of the owner of the farm, Mr Kagiso Magakwe. Magakwe is also known as ‘Anton’.
Mokete immediately went to investigate. As he entered the house through the kitchen door, however, two men overpowered him and tied him up.
They then assaulted him and forced him into a drum and poured water over him.
The men kept demanding the car keys. When Mokete told them he did not have the car keys, they forced him back into the house where they tortured him with a burning newspaper.
They later forced Mokete back into the drum of water and left him there. After some time, when everything was quiet,
Mokete managed to get out of the drum and untie himself.
He immediately went to check on Magakwe.
He found his employer still alive but badly injured and told him he would go and find help.
He managed to get assistance in the neighbourhood and Magakwe was taken to Carletonville Hospital.
It is still not clear what had been stolen besides the cell phones. No arrests have been made so far.
‘The police appeal to the community of the West Rand to help bring the perpetrators to justice,’ says Tshonte.
