SAVE the Vaal is inviting all key stakeholders, including businesses, citizens of Emfuleni and Ngwathe, representatives of boating and angling clubs, and the general public to a meeting at Stonehaven on Vaal, Vanderbijlpark, on Saturday 11 August at 11:00.
SAVE’s lawyer and environmental specialist, Jeremy Ridl, will outline their legal strategy to force the Emfuleni Municipality, the provincial government and the national trea-sury to take the necessary steps to stop pollution of the Vaal River.
Mr Ridl will also report on the progress SAVE has made thus far.
‘We all have to pull together and combine our resources to enforce environmental legislation to ensure that the authorities take immediate action and provide funding to fix the causes of the current sewage pollution.”
“Short-, medium- and long-term uninterrupted infrastructural development have to be enforced, including the Sedibeng Regional Sewage Scheme,” said Malcolm Plant, Chairperson of SAVE the Vaal.
“The sewage pollution in Emfuleni, caused by the collapse of the Council’s sanita- tion system, has reached crisis proportions.”
He said it has caused massive health and environmental risks to the area and has affected communities downstream and be-yond.
‘The health risk, in particular, will affect our most vulnerable communities,’ said Plant.
