Telkom cables being stolen bit by bit

Criminals target Telkom cable.

Last week, the ward councillor of the area that includes Carletonville Ext. 9, Mr Carlos Rebelo, showed the Carletonville Herald where the cable thieves have been stealing underground cabling in this area.

‘They are literally stealing our infrastructure from under our noses,’ Rebelo complained. He pointed out several deep trenches in the veld alongside this residential area. He also identified long pieces of rubberised housing that had been stripped from the cables are were scattered around the trenches. The ends of the cabling that has not yet been stolen were also clearly visible. ‘The culprits are ready to just come back and steal more,’ he lamented.
According to Rebelo, observant residents who live nearby notified him of the problem.
Meanwhile, the police in Carletonville have confirmed that such theft is becoming a growing problem.
According to the spokesperson of the police in Carletonville, WO Peter Masooa, a man was promptly arrested in the area on Sunday, 24 June, after he was found in possession of stolen telephone cable.
As far as could be determined, other arrests were also made for the same crime during the past week.
The police have also confirmed that Telkom has opened a case of theft relating to the stolen cabling next to Ext. 9.
As far as could be determined, the theft has started affecting internet services in the area.
