Voting stations throughout South Africa will be open over the weekend  of Saturday and Sunday, 10/11 March, to update voters’ rolls for the 2019 national elections. This follows a court ruling that voters’ rolls must contain the correct address of every voter.
In Ngwathe, Independent Electoral Commission officials will staff all 69 voting     stations from 08:00 till 17:00 to:
•Register new voters
•Re-register voters who have moved since they originally registered; and
•Obtain address details from voters whose addresses are missing or wrong.
‘Young people over 16 should also register, even though they may vote only after they have turned 18,’ says DA councillor, Shirley Vermaak, who serves as an IEC liaison committee member. She says voters should bring along their bar-coded ID book, smart card ID or temporary ID certificate. Proof of  residence is not required but she says something like an invoice or account statement showing in print the voter’s address would be helpful.
‘You will not be allowed to fill in the registration form yourself so your printed address will make the IEC officials’ job easier and speed things up,’ she explains.
Registered voters can check where they are registered by sending an SMS with their ID number to 32810. They can also update their details online (www.elections.org.za/MyIEC).
