PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION INTO THE GENEVA LEVEL CROSSING COLLISION BETWEEN A SHOSHOLOZA MEYL TRAIN AND A TRUCK

On 4 January 2018 at about 09h00, a Shosholoza Meyl train collided with a truck at the Geneva level crossing in the Free State Province. The truck, which was hauling two trailers, was dragged on the railway line for about 139 meters resulting in the derailment of six train coaches.
The Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) has since dispatched Safety Inspectors to the scene to conduct a preliminary investigation and can confirm that 15 passengers were fatally injured, while 260 sustained injuries.
The RSR is in the process of instituting a Board of Inquiry to establish the root cause of the occurrence and to provide recommendations in order to prevent similar occurrences.
Preliminary findings into the collision will be released by the RSR on Monday, 8 January 2018.
