SEBOKENG. – Two Fidelity Guard (FG) employees were hospitalised after suspects cornered their cash-in-transit van in Zone 17 recently.

The heavily armed suspects blew their way into the van with explosives to access the money within and made away with an undisclosed sum of cash, leaving behind empty safe boxes, firearms and their vehicles.

Police spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda said the van was attacked at the U-Save supermarket in Zone 14.The driver of the van and his assistant managed to drive off to Masoheng, between Zone 14 and 17 in Sebokeng.

They were not aware that there were four other suspects following them in their own vehicles.Another gun fight ensued, and the suspects hit the tyres, bringing the van to a halt, before they planted explosives to access the money.

An FG driver and his assistant jumped out, running for cover towards nearby houses. Police say other drivers of a Jetta, Audi, Mercedes Benz, and Ford Drifter seized the cash before they drove away.

Apparently police driving around the area received a tip-off.

They followed the suspects’ vehicles to Zone 10 Extension 3 where they entered a house. The suspects unfortunately managed to grab the money, whereupon they ran away in different directions.

The police searched the house and found empty money safe boxes, R4 rifles, pump action firearms, and a pistol.

No arrests have been made. Police appeal to members of the public who might have seen the suspects to report to them by calling 0800 10111 or reporting to the nearest police station.
