Bangladesh capitulated on the final morning of the first test against South Africa at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom to go from 49/3 overnight to 90 all out as the Proteas bagged a comfortable 333 run win.

It seemed that the Bangladesh batsmen were in a hurry to head to Bloemfontein for the second test starting on Friday 6 October, as they lost their wickets through a combination of soft dismissals and accurate bowling.

The Bangladeshi batsmen were cannon fodder for the SA bowling attack as Keshav Maharaj (4/25) and Kagiso Rabada (3/33) put the match to bed halfway through the morning session.

This was also Bangladesh’s lowest total against South Africa and fifth lowest overall total in test cricket. Dean Elgar picked up the man of the match award for his 199 in South Africa’s first innings.

“This was an all-round sparkling performance and I am proud of how the team played. Our openers performed and we executed our plans. We dominated every aspect of the test,” said Proteas captain, Faf du Plessis at the post match press conference.

Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh captain, lamented the fact that their batsmen did not show enough composure and grit to save the test.

“It was not easy to face a quality bowling attack, but I feel the deck was still good to bat on. We did not show enough skill and character and that was disappointing. We will need to improve drastically before the second test,” he added.
