It is that time of the year when the employed go back to work and the learners and students go back to school. Criminals take opportunity by breaking in to houses to make quick cash. Make sure your house is equipped with security measures such as alarm systems, burglar guards etc. Some of the house breaking occur during times when residents leave for work, school etc. in the morning and during the afternoon up until 18:00 to 19:00. The criminals break in to steal Plasma TV’s, sound systems, play stations, cellphones and other electric appliances.

Marking of property is of utmost importance because if your property is stolen and police do recover it during the course of the investigation ownership have to be proved.  If it is not marked or there is no prove that the property belongs to you, you will not be able to claim ownership of that particular property. Ask your nearest police station for advise on how to mark your property or what documents should be kept as proof after purchasing of any valuable property especially electric appliances. Know your neighbours and be part of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) structures.

Some crime hints that will assist in the prevention of house robberies and theft:

Ø  Know your neighbours and build a relationship of mutual trust and support. When going away inform them.

Ø  It is always best to arrange with persons living in the same street as you to be ready at all times to come to the rescue of one another in dangerous or suspicious times.

Ø  Exchange phone numbers or signaling methods when you find yourself in distress. Your strength always lies in how many people are able to support you in an emergency.

Ø  Keep cash and valuables at the bank or safes

Ø  Do not leave your keys in a hidden place for domestic staff or children.

Ø  Always keep your keys safe to prevent duplication thereof.

Ø  Never leave your house keys under the doormat, in a pot plant or in the outside toilet. Once you have locked your door from inside remove the key and place it in a safe place.

Ø  Know your emergency numbers

Ø  If they have an alarm system always ensure that when you leave the house it is activated
