Safety tips when travelling with a minor as a passenger:

Baby/toddler car seats: The regulations for car seats for kids stipulate that the driver of a motor vehicle operated on a public road shall ensure that an infant ( up to the age of 3) travelling in such a motor vehicle is seated on an appropriate child restraint. Older children should preferably sit in the back seat and should be buckled up at all times whilst driving. Children that sit on their parent’s laps and stand on the seats usually end up as fatalities when the vehicle is involved in an accident.

  • Precaution against running over children: Drivers must ensure that the car is parked/stationary and not idling while putting children in the vehicle or taking them out of the car. Some of the parents let their children get out of the car while the car is in motion as they are in hurry.
  • Make sure that there are no loose objects in the car as they may fly loose when you break suddenly or hinder you while driving or hurt your children.
  • Parents should ensure that children are dropped at safe and designated areas such as pedestrian crossing points, school gate or building to avoid children crossing the road unsupervised.
  • Parents should avoid overloading cars with children because this is against the law.
  • If your child is travelling with a taxi or carpool, make sure that the vehicle used is roadworthy.
  • Avoid at all times loading children on the back of a bakkie to school as it can be dangerous.
