ONLINE shopping is on the increase this festive season as more tech-savvy consumers opt for the click instead of the queue.

According to experts, a considerable percentage of festive spending is set to be generated from online shopping this year as e-commerce continues to make gains in South Africa.

Expert technology analyst – Arthur Goldstuck, who is the managing director of tech research company, World Wide Worx, noted a steady increase in the number of South Africans transacting online.

Goldstuck confirmed that online retail is expected to rake in more than R9-billion in turnover in 2016– a whopping 20 percent of which is generated during the festive season alone.

“Twenty percent of online purchases, which amounts to R1,8 billion, is generated during the period between mid-November until Christmas,” he says.

According to Goldstuck, online purchases are being made across various product categories as consumers are becoming more comfortable buying “just about anything” online.
