New Council members on the red carpet

The first meeting of the new Ngwathe Local Council held on 16 August was attended by a large crowd of people in the Parys Town Hall. The councillors entered the brightly decorated hall on red-carpeted steps after marching from the Forum Building and along Kerk and Middel streets, led by brass bands from local schools. The programme began with an oath-taking ceremony at which the Chief Magistrate of Kroonstad officiated, before all 36 councillors signed an affirmation. The programme began with an oath-taking ceremony at which the Chief Magistrate of Kroonstad officiated, before all 36 councillors signed an affirmation.
In addition to the election of the Speaker and Mayor, the programme included the election of chairpersons of the seven Section 79 Committees and representatives on SALGA (SA Local Government Association) structures.
Mayor Joey Mohela was re-elected as Mayor while the new Speaker is Neheng Mopedi. The previous Speaker, Philemon Ndayi is now the Chief Whip for the ANC. The 3 EFF Councillors, Bakwena Shadrack Thene, Sylvia Radebe en Ramailane Motebele were dressed in red overalls.
In her Mayoral speech Me Mohela thanked the public for putting their faith and trust in the ANC to once again, lead this municipality. She pointed out that even with former councillors from the opposition parties in the council, they had a healthy and harmonious relationship founded on progressive principles of engagement. “They indeed played a meaningful role in the broader existence of this municipality.”
She reminded the new Council to serve the best interest of the municipality and its population. Respect from one politician to another must play a paramount significant role, she said.

Miyen, Carina Serfontein, P.M. Molaphene, Arnold Schoonwinkel, R.S. Ferendale, N.A. Sehume, Jaco la Cock, Shirley Vermaak, B.S. Thene, S. Radebe, R. Motebele and Philip van der Merwe.
