Another 54 title deeds, 20 of which were sponsored by The De Villiers family from the Cape Province, and the others sponsored by indivi-duals, could be handed out recently to people from Tumahole thanks to the Free Market Foundation’s Khaya Lam initiative which all started in Ngwathe, Parys.
In total, 3 200 title deeds have been handed out countrywide so far, with the first 85 being handed out in September 2013 in Ngwathe.
Khaya Lam (My House) aims to bring the economic power of home ownership to black tenants deprived of the dignity and rights under apartheid. Under the 1913 Land Act blacks were unable to own land or their properties in townships.
Without proper title deeds, the rightful owners cannot move to another area to work     without risking losing their property, or borrow money against their house to start a business.
The Free Market Foundation (FMF) therefore established a pilot project in  Tumahole, to convert properties to full title.
Although preference is given to the indigent, anyone can apply for a title deed, especially if they have already invested in the property.
More title deeds will be handed out at the Mosepidi hall on 27 July.
