MEYERTON. – Midvaal Mayor Councillor Bongani Baloyi have received reliable information that the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) has reached an agreement with its alliance partner, the ANC, to destabilise Midvaal Local Municipality.

The DA-run Midvaal municipality, the best run in the province,  faced a rare one-day strike on June 21 by SAMWU workers, which ended on June 22.

A meeting was held on June 27 between Midvaal management and the labour union and an agreement has been reached when a memorandum of understanding was signed.

However, sources now claim that a SAMWU-ANC plot is underway to destabilise Midvaal by way of sabotaging service delivery and damaging public and private property in the run-up to the local government elections on August 3.

“Such actions must be condemned in the strongest regard and the DA will not idly stand by and allow this to happen,” Mayor Baloyi said.

They call on the ANC to abandon this undemocratic plot. “They are welcome to campaign anywhere in the country. But they should do this with ideas and plans, not violence and intimidation.

“Authorities in Midvaal have been placed on high alert to deal with potential threats, and we urge the SAPS to ensure that public property is protected and that all residents kept safe.

“A DA government is an honest government that listens, responds, and takes positive action to improve the lives of its residents. We will continue to ensure that we make progress.”
