The community of Phase 2 in Ext.4 hosted an event on 23 May, to show their appreciation for a patrol team that has resolved crime issues in the neighbourhood.

Crime has been reduced drastically to almost zero percent in Phase 2 and, for the past three years, the neighbourhood has become the safest in Khutsong Phase 2’s crime-combating patrolling unit was the brainchild of Mr Thato Raliting and Mr Thozamile Skosana and was established in 2013. The main purpose of the project was to fight crime in the area and to create a peaceful and safe neighbourhood.

The patrollers are fifteen members of the Phase 2 community who volunteer their services to keep the streets safe from 5 pm to 5 am.  All the households in Phase 2 contribute R20 a month to sustain the project. This token of appreciation is divided among the patrollers. On Saturday, the community celebrated the achievements of this initiative and thanked the patrollers for their heroic community service.

Among those who attended was the executive mayor, who has played a pivotal role, and continues to do so, in making sure that the project is a success. Mr Maila, the sector manager from the SAPS, the CPF chairperson, Rev. Ramoba and the chairperson of the ANC Youth League branch, Mr Sankatana Sebidi, have been hands-on in assisting the project and have formed a strong relationship to keep the team going.

During the event, Mr Motlhabane, the chairperson of the patrol team, said the plan, going forward, is to form patrol teams around the whole of Khutsong to fight crime.

“It will also be easier to report crime if the community is united,” he said.
