One of the biggest challenges facing youth in disadvantaged areas is the general lack of access to career guidance and advice. ArcelorMittal South Africa’s Sebokeng Science Centre has sought to address this problem, together with the Careers Exhibition and Information Association (CEIA) and the Sedibeng District Department of Education, by hosting the third annual Vaal Career Exhibition from 18-22 May at the ArcelorMittal Science Centre situated in Sebokeng.

Various universities and private colleges from around Gauteng and the Vaal region are exhibiting at the career fair with the aim being to provide local Grade 12 learners with the opportunity to deliberate different career options with seasoned professionals and to acquire information pertaining to tertiary qualifications.

Based on experience of previous years, it is anticipated that around 6995 learners will visit the exhibition stands at the career fair. Representatives from ArcelorMittal South Africa were on hand to provide information on careers in the technical and engineering fields and hand out leaflets on bursaries, loans and sponsorships offered by the company.

“Our goal with this initiative is to create opportunities for learners to acquire information pertaining to careers paths, general employment opportunities and requirements for further study,” said Prudence Masike, Specialist: CSI at ArcelorMittal South Africa. “The career fair assists youth around the Vaal region with information to help them make informed subject choices and gain a realistic understanding of their own abilities, interests and personality traits.”
