Likkewane to host friendly canoe polo

If you are looking for a new sport, why not try canoe polo?

Parys is known for its water activities like whitewater rafting and fishing, but the town also has a vibrant canoe polo club. Canoe polo is an internationally-recognised sport, where teams of five paddle long, thin kayaks on flat water and manoeuvre a ball with their hands or paddles to score in nets at the ends of the canoe polo pitch.

Every year, the different provinces alternate in hosting the National Canoe Polo Championships. Because the player numbers in the North West and Free State are fairly low, players from Potchefstroom and Parys stand for selection to the Gauteng team. Every year, at least five players from the Likkewaan Canoe Club (LKK) in Parys represent the province in different age categories.

In 2023, one of our players, Johan Stoltz, was selected to the u. 21 men’s national team, eligible to compete in the World Championships in China later this year.

If you are looking for a new sport, why not try canoe polo? Practice happens two evenings a week, and frequently on weekends (Call a game and we will be there!).

On Saturday, LKK will host two Johannesburg clubs and players from Potchefstroom for a friendly tournament between 09:00 and 13:00. Spectators are welcome, and, if you like what you see, contact the LKK canoe polo committee representative Taryn van Olden at 082 779-1314.
