Another ATM bombed… This time in Vanderbijlpark

"They took an undisclosed amount of money from the ATM and left the scene on foot."

VANDERBIJLPARK. – In what seems like rehearsed scenes from the movies, yet another Automated Teller Machine (ATM) was bombed in Sedibeng last week.

The ATM was bombed in Vanderbijlpark, while Sedibeng Ster reported this week that, also last week, two more ATMs were bombed in Zone 7 and Mandela Square Shopping Centre in Sebokeng.

Now, about ten men are on the run with cash and cigarettes after bombing the Techni Motors Engen Garage in Vanderbijlpark last week.

It is said that four employees, all men, were on duty at the garage when the men attacked. Two of the employees were deployed as petrol attendants, one as a security guard and another was operating the till when the ten men wearing balaclavas and hands gloves confronted the employees that were outside the garage and ordered them to lie down while pointing them with guns, and telling them not to look their way.

Four of the suspects are said to have gone inside the garage’s shop and one of them ordered the cashier to give him money from the till and some cigarettes, he was also ordered to lie down thereafter.

Moments later the victims are said to have heard loud a bang from the ATM machine which was followed by another bang.

Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Nombulelo Mohlakoana said: “ The petrol attended heard the suspects shooting at the cars that were approaching and/or passing the garage while others searched them and took their cellphones and security hand radio. None of the petrol attended was injured.”

Police are investigating ATM bomb cases and appeal to the community to help them with any information that could help them to arrest suspects.

  • In the Zone 7 ATM bombing five suspects were arrested, while in the Mandela Square bombing, no suspects were arrested.
